Airborne lasers have drawn the attention of the Air Forces Air Combat Command. The headquarters is studying the use of it for anti-tactical ballistic missiles and is also evaluating the possibility of using it as a long-range reconnaissance sensor. To validate the program, the U.S. Air Force Phillips Laboratory is seeking contractors to retrofit aircraft for long-range propagation experiments. This is part of a plan to determine the likelihood of airborne launchers dropping tactical ballistic missiles. Pulsed solid-state lasers will be launched on test aircraft (NC-135) at distances of 50 to 200 km. The airplane must rise to 13000m altitude and fly at 830km / h. Laser propagation experiments are a key part of a 48-month plan to reduce airborne laser risk.
