Born in New York City, he lives in the Linden neighborhood of Brooklyn, home to the worst low-cost housing area in New York City and the slums of people. His father was a mail sorter, and the mother was a receptionist for a burglar alarm company, and the whole family had a very tight life. As the eldest son, he started his housework with his parents at age 7 and took care of his younger siblings. At the age of 13, he started to find ways to make money. That year, New York held the National Basketball Games, he went to the scene to sell soda drinks. Although each drink only earns 2 U.S. dollars and 75 cents, and is both tired and hot, he persevered. He set himself the goal must be out of Brooklyn. At the age of 16, he took the college entrance exam and successfully applied for a scholarship to Harvard.
