戏剧舞台艺术创作中,塑造人物是营造艺术形象的最重要工作。戏曲的人物塑造,是经过行当的技能操作来具体实现的;在戏曲的发展进程中,行当与人物的对应关系逐步细化,最终在京剧的鼎盛期,形成了一套范围明确、分工细腻、操作性极强的对应中国古代社会众生相的扮演体系。戏曲行当一端对应着人物,另一端又与表演者相对应。在二者关系中,行当是基本稳定的,而表演者的年龄、心理则处于不断成长、发展的过程中。经过行当这个中介体的串联,戏曲舞台的创作者———演员,与戏曲舞台的创作对象———人物,得以结合起来、融合起来,最终交织出绚丽的艺术火花,烘托起激发无限畅想的感人形象。
