This paper explores the essence of metaphor and its function and significance in teaching English major from a cognitive perspective. It analyzes emphatically the significance of metaphor as a way of thinking to related teaching in English majors’ vocabulary and reading teaching through concrete examples. The purpose is to strengthen the understanding of English teachers and learners about the importance of developing metaphorical thinking and understanding of the world so that they can become a systematic and comprehensive English vocabulary and reading teaching system.
