Yuan Tongli (1895-1965), a Chinese library scientist, educator, pioneer of modern library activities, and a closer representative of cultural ties between the East and the West. He proposed a large-scale exchange program not only for library staff but also for students. Yuan Tongli was born in 1895 in Xu Shui County, Hebei Province, China, where he is the second son of a government official. Yuan Tongli in his early years showed great interest in books and learning. He graduated from Peking University in 1916 and immediately worked as an assistant librarian at Tsinghua University. In the following year, he became the acting director and was mainly responsible for the construction of the new library of Tsinghua University.
