辽宋夏金元时期,北方地区的民族融合甚为明显。蒙古国名相耶律楚材的家族,从辽初耶律倍传承至元代的耶律希亮等人,明显表现出民族文化的兼容性,成为具有代表性的个案。在北方民族大规模进入中原的过程中,耶律氏家族整体有南迁的趋势,并逐渐在中原地区定居生活。随着家族的迁徙,其婚姻关系呈现出族际广泛通婚的趋势。如果单从血缘关系来看,元朝时期的耶律氏家族成员,其契丹族血统已在不断稀释中淡化,多民族融合的成分已占主流地位。在社会交往方面,也较多地表现出与他民族成员问的交际。其宗教信仰,则明显具有杂糅多种信仰的特点,并且具有渐趋以儒教为主的倾向,家族的政治观念也因此向以忠孝为核心的价值观发展。历数百年之嬗变,耶律氏家族的社会生活已在不断的民族交往中发生着变化,表现出明显的兼容性特征;其族群认同意识的发展,也反映出元代契丹族的族群意识已逐渐淡化。
