周恩来留“美髯”是其在革命斗争中改变和隐蔽自己面貌特征的重要手段。中央文献出版社出版的《周恩来传》中提到,周恩来是敌人抓捕和暗杀的主要目标,特别是认识他的人很多,因此“他通常装扮成商人,后来又留起了大胡子,所以党内许多人叫他‘胡公’。”西安事变具备秘密战线的所有特征,周恩来的“美髯”也是一条重要线索,反映了周恩来刚到西安的活动,也折射出当时共产党与张学良的微妙关系。
