早老性痴呆(Alzheimer’s)是一种尚存许多问题的疑难病症,对这一症状的研究,目前有些突破性进展。一种称之为卢一淀粉状蛋白质(β-amyloid,是患者脑中变态斑的主要成分)的物质究竟是使患者产生神经细胞退化而引起该症的发生抑或仅是该症产生的结果?目前波士顿的一些研究者认为,β-淀粉状蛋白质引起了神经细胞退化。他们第一次证明,肽可以使神经细胞产生损害。他们在遭此损害的活的动物脑中看到和该病患者脑中相类似的情况。另一重要发现是 Alzheimer’s is a difficult problem that still has many problems.
