The U.S. Electronics Industry Association predicts U.S. defense costs will drop from 281 billion U.S. dollars in 1992 to 197 billion U.S. dollars in 2002. The main part of the reduction is operating and maintenance costs, and the funds for science and technology are basically stable. In spite of this, the Association expects that research and development test and evaluation fees will be reduced by 15 billion U.S. dollars in the next 10 years to 23.4 billion U.S. dollars. Given the shrinking defense fees, the military laser market is likely to start shrinking next year. In the field of research and development, the procurement of lasers this year is likely to be flat or decline from last year, especially the research and development of laser weapons will suffer serious setbacks.
