画家通常用职业的眼光观察和感受周围的事物,看到的是自己理想的美的形式,精神,是一种正式创作前的无数腹稿。如把客观物体抛开表像,直接把握它的本质、精神,甚而组成线条、色彩、块面等形式因素。这种观察方法的专业训练,有助于短时间内把握事物的本质而不被其它因素所干扰,并能顺利用自己独有的,业已形成的语言表达出来。这样理解并不是要求形式语言在画家头脑中先入为主,而是一种个性语言体现画家个性心理,情感的普遍现象。如杜米埃眼中是人物的影像、神态和画面的黑白构成,光线形成的阴阳对比和整体人的轮廓。这种形象是杜米埃本人对事物本质精神的独特理解和对自然界的生命体验。吴冠中眼中的风景、山水则是形式因素点、线、面、色块构成的交响乐。这里说的是首先从体验事物到表达事物本质精神的过程,不应被语言因素所障碍或绊勒。在绘画艺术创作过程中,语言表达应极其熟练掌握的。就如人的讲话,语言表达应极其自然,而不是挖空心思运用华丽的辞藻来说明一件事物。语言只不过是一种表达方式和手段,为造型服务,虽然它也包含着作者的思想感情和精神内涵,但它应是自然的,不自觉的。为艺术语言而挖空心思,不断地、有意地去搞新形式、新技法,即所谓的创新,这种创新只是一种外在的形式框架。真正的语言(具个性的)是由内心发出,由表达事物本质感受而产生的一种最为贴近的天然话语,这种语言是随机的、变幻的、自然的,因而是新颖的,是画家本人独具的。
