工程地质勘察的基本任务是运用地质和力学知识回答工程上的地质问题,目的主要是查明工程地质条件(与工程建筑有关的地质要素之综合,包括地形地貌条件、岩土类型及其工程地质性质、地质结构、水文地质条件等)、分析存在的工程地质问题、对建筑场区做出工程地质评价,从地质方面保证工程建筑与地质环境相适应,使工程安全、经济、运行正常。
