《瞭望》周刊先后刊出了几篇讨论《陈独秀一家人》的文章,有批评,有反批评,颇为热闹.有朋友见我写过一点传记性质的作品,怂恿我也参加讨论,以此为例,研究一下传记作品必须遵循的原则.我对于时下流行的传记作品很有些看法,也愿意谈谈自己对于传记写作的意见.只是觉得这本《陈独秀一家人》并不适宜用做讨论传记作品的标本.一个作者著书立说,首先总得具备驱遣语言文字的能力吧.翻开这本书一看,就会发现他还不具备此种能力.要同他讨论的,是通不通的问题,还不是好不好的问题.请看下面的一段话:
