英国物理学家卢瑟福在青年时代,曾当过一段时间的中学教师。他特别尊重教师艰苦而高贵的工作,并对中学教育表示了极大的关心。自从他担任了卡文迪许实验室的主任后,经常为中学物理教师举办科学讨论会,设法让中学教师亲自动手做各种实验。他还举办各种科学报告会,向中学教师介绍物理学的新成就,以及物理学在工业技术上的新应用,开阔了中学教师的眼界。卢瑟福的这种关心中学教育的做法和精神,是十分感人的。
Rutherford, a British physicist, was a high school teacher who had spent time in his youth. He particularly respected teachers’ arduous and noble work and expressed great concern for secondary education. Since he assumed the post of director of Cavendish Laboratory, he has often held scientific seminars for physics teachers in secondary schools, trying to get the secondary school teachers to do all kinds of experiments themselves. He also held a variety of scientific presentations to introduce secondary school teachers to new achievements in physics and new applications of physics in industrial technology, broadening the horizons of secondary school teachers. Rutherford’s concern with the practice and spirit of secondary education is very touching.
