1980年,朝鲜领导人金日成到北京参加抗美援朝30周年纪念活动,邓小平会见了金日成,时任北京军区司令员的秦基伟会见时也在座。邓小平和金日成在会见时自然谈到30年前的那场战争,金日成代表朝鲜国家和人民感谢中国的帮助和支持,顺便向邓小平打听原志愿军十五军的战斗英雄柴云振。邓小平转问原志愿军十五军军长秦基伟,秦基伟回答说:“柴云振是原志愿军十五军的一名战士,在朝鲜江原道金化郡相达峰战斗中英勇顽强,志愿军总部授予他一级战斗英雄荣誉称号。”秦基伟接着说道:“我们现暂不清楚柴云振的情况,一旦打听到消息,我们一定及时向金主席报告。”旁边的邓小平听了秦基伟对柴云振的介绍,也为其隐姓埋名的举动所感动,指示:“尽快派人寻找柴云振。只要柴云振在这个世界上,哪怕是大海里捞针,我们也要把他捞起来!”
