During the Western Han Dynasty， there was a prominent Confucian scholar named Dong Zhongshu ， a native of Guangchuan， which today is Zaoqiang County of Hengshui City in Hebei Province.
As a scholar specialized in the study of the Spring and Autumn Annals， the chronicle of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn Period， and entered the imperial service as a Doctor during the reign of Emperor Jing of Han.
Dong studied very hard in his youth， often spending nights and days reading books. He regularly got less than 3 hours of rest per day， as he did not go to the bed until daybreak and got up for reading immediately after the cock crowed.
Nearby Dong’s study room， there was a beautiful garden flourishing with colorful flowers. However， Dong was so entirely absorbed in study that he never stepped foot in the garden in three years， nor took a peek into it.
His friends advised him not to always stay at the study room but to go out for a walk， but he refused， saying that he would discuss about books with others even if he went out of the room.
