Article Outline This study explores the issue of whether the immune system of epithelial tissue can activate its own defensive mechanism by identifying its own structural disruption using the C. elegans epidermis as a model. Nematode epidermis in the fungal infection or mechanical damage will activate the downstream immune response, causing the release of antimicrobial peptides. After systematically knocking out the mechanical components of the nematode epidermis, only the destruction of the top hemidesmosomal adhesive structure stimulated a significant immune response and the expression of antimicrobial peptides was significantly increased.
