According to the “Nature” magazine reported that a panel of experts of the National Science and Technology Commission (NSTC) submitted a report to Congress, urging the United States should pay attention to research in Antarctica. The report states: If the United States wants to maintain its political influence on Antarctica, it must continue its research activities in the region. The report was written at the request of some senators who questioned the worth of the National Science Foundation (NSF) investing 200 million U.S. dollars annually for Antarctica research. The report praised the scientific quality of the study. However, it underlined that the main reason for continuing to implement the research project, including the research conducted throughout Antananar year itself, is to ensure that the United States exerts its influence in the management of the implementation of the Antarctica Treaty. The Antarctic Treaty, signed in 1959, forbids any military activity on or near the continent and any claims by any person against it, including a ban on the clashes between Argentina, Chile and the United Kingdom in the region. On a memorandum attached to the NSTC report, the U.S. State Department declared that the release should be made
