现代通信技术与多媒体计算机网络技术相结合,发展成为一种跨越世纪的新技术——ATM网络技术。ATM网络技术的发展,突破了传统通信模拟化处理语音、图像的应用局限性,使传统的电话发展成可视电话、会议电视等有临场感的通信;可以通过网络传送多媒体信息、电子新闻,还可以居家购物、远程学习和开展旅行预约等业务。ATM网络技术的广泛应用将极大提高人们的生产、生活效率,减少社会的交通运输负担,改变人们教育、娱乐方式。近年来,大量的局域网LAN是由接入子网和主干子网这两种结构组成,最常见的接入子网是4Mbit/s令牌环LAN和10Mbit/s CSMA/CD LAN,而主干子网则以100Mbit/s光纤分配数据接口LAN最为普遍。本文将主要介绍ATM城域网络的基本结构和网络工程的实例。
