建国前夕 ,于道泉先生放弃了在海外的舒适生活 ,毅然回到故土 ,以自己的专业所长为祖国和藏学事业做出了突出贡献 :在北京大学东方语文系首开藏语专业 ;为国立北平图书馆收集少数民族语文图书 ;帮助中央人民广播电台筹备开播了藏语节目。特别是作为中央民族学院藏学专业的奠基人、著名藏学教授 ,多年来为国家培养了大批藏学专门人才和民族地区各级领导干部 ;并在教学的同时 ,积极组织编纂适合学习和研究之用的专业词典 ,对弘扬和发展藏族文化事业做出重大贡献。
