History of guitars (continued) Gitten gittern or medieval guitar see right (London, British Museum). Guten’s body and neck are carved from a single piece of wood. There is a hole in the back of the fretboard for the player to reach into his thumb. The strings are attached to the buttons at the lower end of the body, passing above a string horse. Vieira vihuela (pictured above left) is an important plucked instrument during the Renaissance. Vieira’s body is guitar-shaped body, but set the string similar to the Tiut. It is almost exclusively Spanish, usually owned by nobility. The picture on the right next shows the guitar from the late 17th century
