Both histological changes and protein patterns of intima oratherosclerotic(AS) lesions at the dorsal and ventral walls ofhuman aortas in 23 cases were studied by high resolution 2-dimen-sional PAGE and histological examination. It was the firsttime to find that 1) the intima in the dorsal wall was about1 time thicker in average than that in the ventral wall of thesame case,but their histological construction and components weresimilar to each other, so no significant differences were foundin their protein patterns,2) with comparison of the protein pa-tterns of AS lesions to those of intima of the same case, onlythe amount of albumin was more in type Ⅰof fatty streaks; theamounts of all groups of proteins were more in type Ⅱof fattystreaks and early AS plaques; the amounts of all groups ofcellular proteins were less and those of plasma ones more inadvanced plaques and complications, 3) with comparison of proteinpatterns of early AS lesions to those of advanced ones, a lowerappearance rotio of α_1 -antichymotrypsin and haptoglobin β-chain,more cellular proteins and less plasma proteins in amount werein the early stage lesions ; but higher ratio of α_1 -antichymo-trypsin and haptoglobin β-chain, less cellular proteins and moreplasma ones were in the advanced stage.
