Shares of Dow Jones’ Barron magazine recently reviewed some of the stocks that performed better in 2003. Among the biggest gains was Best Buy Co. (BBY), which continued to enjoy the momentum of consumer electronics with the popularity of digital video discs and video games. Best Buy shares soared 195%. The other two outstanding stocks come from the humble coal industry. Analysts believe coal will be an attractive source of alternative energy for utilities and other large users, given the high natural gas prices in the United States.
