《史记·田敬仲完世家》载:齐威王即位初,齐国不治,诸侯并伐。威王召来即墨大夫对他说:“自从您治理即墨以来,诽谤的话每天都传来。然而我派人视察即墨,田野都已开垦,人民丰衣足食,公务没有积压,东方因此安宁,这是由于您不讨好我的左右来求取名誉的缘故。”于是封给他食邑万户。威王又召来阿大夫说:“自从您治理阿地以来,赞美的言辞天天能听到,然而我派人视察阿地,土地未开垦,人民贫苦。赵国攻甄城,您不能解救;卫国攻占薛陵,您不知道。您重贿我的左右,以求取名誉。”威王下令,当天就杀了阿大夫以及曾经赞美过阿大夫的人。于是齐国为之震惧,人们再也不敢掩饰错误,务尽其诚,齐国大治。诸侯闻之,不敢攻齐二十余年之久。
