美国的导航星全球定位系统是继“子午仪”之后的一个先进的卫星导航系统。为了满足美国陆海空三军愈来愈高的卫星导航的要求,美国防部在1973年正式批准了可供三军共同使用的导航星全球定位系统计划,并被列为美国重点空间计划之一。当时预计的计划费用为42.5亿美元,仅次于阿波罗登月计划(约250亿美元)和航天飞机计划(约100亿美元)。经过十几年的研究和试验,美国已攻破了建立这个复杂的卫星导航系统所遇到的技术难关。现在已转入实用型导航星的生产和发射阶段。
The United States navigation star GPS is the “satellite meridian” after an advanced satellite navigation system. In order to meet the ever-increasing demand for satellite navigation by the U.S. armed, naval and air forces, the U.S. Department of Defense formally approved the navigational satellite global positioning system plan for use by the three armed forces in 1973 and is listed as one of the key space programs in the United States.
