After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Shen Congwen experienced a bitter displacement in most of the year. In the late spring of 1938, he came to Kunming in Spring City and later taught at the Southwest Associated University. The Southwest Associated University, home of the Chinese liberal intellectuals at the time, was now under the influence of various Western modern literary trends.
