Traditional ethylene glycol (MEG) production processes use direct hydration of ethylene oxide (EO). To achieve high MEG selectivity, a large excess of water is required in the reaction system (typically a molar ratio of H2O / EO can be up to 20) and the concentration of MEG in the reaction is less than 10%. Therefore, distillation of the product is a high energy consumption process. To reduce
