In this experiment, ex vivo hamster hearts were infused with standard Kreds-Henseleit solution to demonstrate that these isolated hearts had similar viability before perfusion and 24 hours prior to being stored in one of three solutions. The three solutions were: (1) saline plus pyruvate (matrix) plus 4% alcohol to arrest the heart (group A); (2) standard cardioplegia (group B); and Alcohol-free saline plus pyruvate (Group C).
