工业工程(1E)最初是从改进制造方法的研究过程中产生的。为了提高劳动生产率,从研究改进操作方法入手,分析工人作业的动作和时间,因而获得了巨大的生产效益。以后又把这些研究方法扩大到一切工作领域,便逐渐形成了“工作研究”这个学科分支。在科学管理的基础上,工业工程的研究内容扩展到生产与库存管理、物料搬运与储存、工厂布置、质量管理、成本分析与控制、价值工程、投资分析、财务分析与管理、可靠性工程、安全工程等方面。以后又扩展到制造工业以外的生产领域、服务行业和政府部门;例如,工程项目的评估与分析、投资决策的研究、设施规划与设计、人的因素研究、作业标准化、管理信息系统等方面。下面举一些例子:
