It is well-known that Xunzi 荀子 was one of the most important thinkers in ancient China.But interpreting the spirit of Xunzi is still a puzzle.People throughout the ages have offered different perspectives on Xunzi,such as his being a Confucian,a logician,and even a social reformer.As the author contends,this book deviates from the normal route by positing a virtue ethics orientation rather than the usual social-political interpretation,which shifts attention from the external to the internal in terms of how "moral cultivation" should be understood in the Xunzi.Also,it presents not only a discussion of xing (human nature) and the relation between li 礼 (ritual) and yi 义 (rightness) but a thorough investigation of Xunzi's moral philosophy.In the following,I first discuss the structure of the book and summarize its contents,and then I pose some brief questions on Wang's reading of Xunzi.
