An ordinary virus has been identified as a reasonable cause of juvenile diabetes, which opens the door to preventive vaccination. The New England medical community reports that the discovery has brought new hope to the suffering of some 300,000 of the most serious diabetic people in the United States. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health and the National Naval Medical Center successfully isolated a virus, Coxsackie B_4, for the first time in the pancreas of a 10-year-old child suffering from fatal diabetes shortly after the pandemic flu. When this virus was injected into experimental animals, some of the inbred mice got the same type of disease. Scientists say this is the first clear evidence that the disease is linked to the virus.
