深圳自1979年建市以来至1999年底累计完成固定资产投资2971.9亿元,年均增长率41.0％;全市931平方公里可建设用地中,已开发土地面积逾500平方公里,其中建成区面积310平方公里(特区内逾130平方公里)。固定资产投资作为主要推动不仅支撑了全市经济总量的高速增长,而且直接形成了全市基本完善的基础设施体系,建成了门类较为齐全、技术水平较高的工业制造体系,在经济发展中发挥了极重要的作用。
