German parliamentarians have come forward with the rights to ostriches and have called for the government to set the minimum standard of living that ostriches should have enjoyed before they were killed. The German federal upper house called for the expansion of existing animal protection legislation to include ostriches in the scope of protection. The health panic that spread throughout Europe (brought about by animal health problems) made Germans eager to find substitutes for traditional poultry and livestock, and ostriches became popular food. The Schleswig-Holstein State has 20 ostrich fields and the government said research shows that ostriches up to 6 feet tall and weighing 330 pounds each require 2150 square feet of space . In addition, in order to ensure that animals that normally live in Africa do not freeze in the cold winter in Germany, some safety measures should also be taken.
