The current mortar strength test method is the method specified in Appendix 2 of the Code for Construction and Acceptance of Masonry Projects. Because this test method is not comprehensive enough to allow the same mortar to be tested by the same test method, different compressive strengths are obtained, and sometimes there are many differences. In the test methods prescribed in the specification, only the moisture content of the test bricks is specified; there is no provision for the water absorption of the test bricks. The water absorption of bricks varies greatly, even for the same batch of bricks in the same production plant, because of the sintering process.
