German Excavation and Mining Equipment Group (BGMR) has tested dark colored plastic samples made of polyamide, polypropylene / polyethylene, styrene and polyvinyl chloride using laser-induced fluorescence sorting. Laboratory test results show that laser-induced fluorescence is suitable for the identification and sorting of dark plastic. In order to simulate field conditions, both “clean” and soiled samples were tested. Using a pattern recognition method based on wavelength-resolved and time-resolved features, it is possible to detect plastic samples well, even if the sample has been contaminated. This is a prerequisite for the sensor-assisted automatic sorting of dark plastic processes. Based on these findings, a site-specific process plan has been developed. In subsequent trials, the suitability of laser-induced fluorescence for the detection of colored plastics in the field must be identified. Based on the results of such follow-up experiments, can the judgment be made whether laser-induced fluorescence can be used as a dedicated sensor or as part of a variety of imaging equipment solutions, for example with NIRS and photographic systems.
