The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is an autonomous institution established within UNESCO (UNESCO) in 1960. Its main purpose is to promote the development of oceans and seas through the concerted action of its member states Scientific surveys to enhance understanding of the nature of the oceans and their resources and, in addition, within the United Nations system, it also plays a coordinating role for marine science and related activities.
