王昌龄《从军行》(其四)一诗究竟表现了怎样的诗歌主旨,历来争讼纷纭,莫衷一是:有“豪言”说,有“苦语”说,也有既是“豪言”又是“苦语”的“折中”说等等。其实,无论从王昌龄“出塞复入塞”乃至边塞诗创作的时间来看,还是从开元前期唐朝边境战争的性质来看;也无论是从王昌龄边塞诗中经常使用的表示“敌人”或“敌国”的诗歌意象来看,还是从本诗艺术手法的具体运用来看,《从军行》(其四)的主旨都只能是表现唐朝将士在保卫边境的战争中,面对恶劣的环境、艰苦的条件和频繁的战斗而凸显出的坚强意志和必胜信念。因而它当然是“豪言”,而非“苦语”,也非两者的“混合”。
