Objective The establishment of animal model of esophageal varices is of great significance for the study on how to prevent and treat the esophageal varices bleeding caused by portal hypertension. The methods reported in the past are complicated or the results are unstable and need to be improved. The purpose of this study was to explore the establishment of a model of esophageal varices in dogs with portal hypertension. Methods Twenty-six healthy adult dogs were selected as study subjects. Portal hypertension was established by means of portal vein shunting and partial ligation of silk thread. The results of 16 large surviving 13. Gastroscopy confirmed that all surviving animals were formed esophageal varices, including mild in 4 cases, moderate in 7 cases, severe in 2 cases. The portal vein pressure reached 0.287 P ± 0.073 kPa, which was significantly different from 0.1308 ± 0.0294 kPa before operation (P <0.01). Conclusion Compared with other methods, the method of this group is simpler, the quality of the model is reliable and the preparation period is obviously shortened.
