刀具的经济性主要取决于切削过程中在切削楔上起作用的工作角度。显然,当工作前角与其最佳值相差3°至5°时刀具耐用度可降低20%,由此其经济性也会相应地下降。因此,要获得经济上最佳的切削条件,则直接受到工作角度的计算、安装条件及切削速度和进给量的制约。对于工作角度的计算,在文献中是用矢量计算方法进行的。因为这种矢量计算方法,常常不能被从事实际工作的人们熟练的运用,所以本文就以最常用的三角关系来阐述切削条件和工作角度之间的关系。
