At the moment, the most commonly cited reason for replacing copper submarine cables with optical fibers is the cost savings. This is not only due to the rising price of copper, but also to many inherent advantages of optical fiber transmission. An optical fiber can talk more than a copper wire more than 20 times. More importantly, there are very few repeaters needed in a fiber optic system. According to estimates by AT & T, the cost of a fiber optic cable on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean may be about two-thirds less than the current submarine cable.
