At present, the determination of the amount of expansion and the expansion force of the expansive soil is performed using a consolidation instrument. The soil sample is placed in a metal ring cutter with a volume of 100 cubic centimeters and immersed under a vertical load of zero, and the vertical expansion is measured. The quantity V_e measures the vertical expansion force P_e using the pressure balance method. Relevant literature considers that using a one-dimensional consolidation instrument to measure the amount of expansion, the results are ideal. However, when the expansive deformation of the expansive foundation occurs due to water immersion, it is not determined by the consolidation tester.
