日本战败之后,审判战犯成为了盟军追究日本战争责任的重要工作。在美军的接管下,东京的巢鸭监狱内收押了包括甲级战犯在内的数千名日本战犯。虽然其中部分战犯被绳之以法,但是随着冷战的到来,美国对日政策发生蜕变,绝大多数的日本战犯都被减刑乃至直接释放,而被处刑的日本战犯也被偷偷的搬入靖国神社合祀,这不仅造成了后来靖国神社参拜的问题,而且也使得日本在战争责任认知上产生了极大的扭曲。
After Japan defeated, the trial of war criminals became an important task for the Allied forces to hold Japan responsible for the war. Under US military takeover, thousands of Japanese war criminals, including Class A war criminals, were held in Tokyo’s Sugamo prison. Although some of the war criminals were brought to justice, with the advent of the Cold War, the United States has degenerated its policy towards Japan, and the vast majority of Japanese war criminals have been commuted or even released directly. The executed Japanese war criminals have also been secretly moved to the Yasukuni Shrine This not only caused the subsequent visit of the Yasukuni Shrine, but also caused Japan to have greatly distorted the recognition of the war responsibility.
