美术对影视的助产关系在历史悠久的美术传统面前可说是:影视是一门成长发展的年轻艺术,而绘画一直被认为是影视艺术的母体艺术,是由不同时代和流派的美术作品为电影的诞生提供了足够借鉴的蓝本。一部影视的视觉风格涵盖了导演组所采取的构图、色彩、光影、运动等元素。大量优秀的影视导演在影片视觉结构的处理上各具匠心,创造出了极富艺术感染力的影像画面,并从中体现出个人独特的视觉风格。默片时代的许多影视理论先驱者,几乎都是把影视的艺术归属和美术(特别是绘画)放在一起。定居于巴黎的意大利诗人卡努杜、世界影视史上第一位影视理论专家,在1911年发表的《第七艺术宣言》中指出:影视是动态造型艺术。
