China recently adopted strict smoking prohibition measures are taken. You have been warned!
The new smoking prohibition took effect from January 1st, 2011. According to the new rule, it is forbidden to smoke in indoor public amd working spaces, public transportation tools and the outdoor working places.
The new prohibition is said to be in accordance with the “WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control”. It is the most strict tobacco control protocol in China.
The new smoking prohibition is the general rule in China. In fact, large cities have introduced their own smoking bans. Below we list the “no smoking” measures in Shanghai and Beijing.

  Shanghai

Shanghai introduced its own tobacco control rules early in March 2010. This rule, whose official title is “Stipulations on Smoking Control in the Public Places of Shanghai”, originally served the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, with the goal of “hosting a smoke-free Expo”.
According to the rule, smoking is prohibited in the primary and secondary schools, hospitals, stadiums, buses, subways, taxis, shopping malls, supermarkets, Internet cafes, elevators. Furthermore, medium and big restaurants, star-rating hotels, video game halls and karaoke halls also lift the ban on smoking. It is forbidden to smoke in the buildings of government departments as well.
Now the scope of “no smoking” protocols in Shanghai has been expanded by the national force. Offenders of the rule will be penalized for smoking in public places with the highest fine of 50 yuan (USD 7.61).

  Beijing

Before the new national rule, Beijing shared nearly the same tobacco control protocol with Shanghai. However, it was introduced in Beijing earlier, with the main task of serving the Olympic Games in 2008.
The policy is officially titled “Rules of Smoking Prohibition in the Public Places of Beijing”. The rules are as follows:
Firstly, smoking is strictly forbidden in these places: indoor areas of medical institutions; nurseries and kindergartens; primary and secondary schools; vocational schools; teaching areas of universities, colleges and training institutions; theatres, concert halls, exhibition halls, museums, galleries, libraries, science museums and the other scientific, cultural and arts areas; offices banks, post offices and telecom operators; shopping malls and supermarkets; buses, subways and taxis; indoor ticket selling rooms and platforms of bus or railway stations; the historical places; stadiums and gyms.
Secondly, special smoking areas are available restaurants and Internet cafe; parks and carnies; waiting rooms of airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations.
Finally, fines will be charged for those who break the stipulations and rewards will be given to those who abide by the rules.

  Caution:
The rules have probably too many stipulations for you to remember. Do not light up your cigarette where there are “no smoking” signs. Don’t follow those who smoke because they themselves may be breaking the no-smoking law.
Since more and more places are listed into the no-smoking areas, you should avoid smoking to stay out of trouble. Smoking at home stays safe though. However, quit smoking for the health of you and your family.
