历史方法有两层涵义：一是认为文学深嵌于历史之中，在历史时序框架内考察文学；一是找寻文学自身时序框架，考察文学本身发展规律。这是文学史研究的两个基本思路。与历史方法相适应并成为其学术特征的是实证。当代古典文学研究不可能简单地回归传统的实证方法，而主要应回归一种实证精神。这与几年来一直在呼吁的重写文学史主题显然具有内在的有机的联系。各种具体研究在重写文学史的框架内展开，而重写文学史工程也因此有了更为精致而实用的建筑材料。
The historical method has two meanings: First, it holds that literature is deeply embedded in history and studies literature within the historical time frame; first, it looks for the sequence framework of literature itself and examines the law of its own development. This is the two basic ideas for the study of literary history. Adapted to the historical method and become its academic characteristics is an empirical evidence. The study of contemporary classical literature can not simply return to the traditional empirical methods, but mainly return to an empirical spirit. This clearly has an inherent organic connection with the theme of rewriting the history of literature that has been calling for years. A variety of specific studies started within the framework of the rewriting of literary history, and the project of rewriting literary history therefore has more refined and practical building materials.
