金川镍矿有四个矿区,其中二矿区储量最大、镍品位最富。二选厂处理贫矿,露天采场即将闭坑,矿石必由二矿区供给。因此对二矿区矿石的合理利用,开展了大量的试验研究。1966年,冶金部矿冶研究总院与金川有色金属公司,对二矿区矿石进行选矿试验研究,近几年来芬兰、美国和我国几个主要研究单位(冶金部矿冶研究总院、白银矿冶研究所,冶金部有色金属研究总院、金川公司研究所等)、进行了大量的研究工作,取得了很大成绩。在混合浮选工艺上有酸法、碱法之分,设计上采用哪种工艺,是有争论的。
