PURPOSE: The researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine whether a 6-week low-calorie intake and aerobic exercise intervention could alter the risk factors for metabolic syndrome (Met S) in obese pre-adolescent Chinese. Methods: The subjects were randomly divided into dietary exercise group (experimental group) and control group. According to their basal metabolic rate, subjects in the experimental group consumed between 1,600 and 2,000 calories per day for 6 weeks and maintained high-load aerobic exercise (6 days a week, 2 times a day for 3 hours each ). A total of 215 obese children aged 11-13 participated in the experiment, of which 167 (95 in the experimental group and 72 in the control group) completed the experiment. Parameters measured before and after the experiment include body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, body fat percentage, blood pressure and other relevant indicators of metabolic syndrome (serum cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, blood glucose) taken from fasting blood samples. Results: All of the indicators in the experimental group were significantly lower (p <0.05) than the control group except for the fasting blood lipids in boys (p = 0.09). Conclusion: A 6-week intensive diet and exercise intervention will help to improve the risk factors for metabolic syndrome in obese children aged 11-13 years in China.
