After Japan successfully defeated British motorcycles, Japan is now threatening the automobile industry in Europe; the advanced industrial technology that Japan is developing will also make Western factories look like blacksmiths. What is the next turn to be threatened by drama? When will East Asian art rout the culturally decadent Western aesthetics? The latter, to a considerable degree, resembles a seemingly conservative and arrogant Western industry. There are two reasons why this question should be raised seriously : 1. We are appalled by the fact that we are aware of the consequences of what we may call the modern cultural imperialism which East Asia is familiar with and which is now in turn disrupting the West as a very materialistic force Cultural security; and second, to prompt us to think about where the foundation of our aesthetic experience is.
