Chaucer was the founder of British realist literature. His main part in literary history was his long poem Canterbury Tales, which he wrote in 1387-1400. British literature has traditionally been a tradition of spiritual and moral exploration and the Canterbury Tales is a landmark in this regard. The pilgrimage journey plays a prominent role in the subject and structure of this book. The poet seeks to explore the relationship between man and man, man and nature, man and creature in the real life, in the journey of pilgrimage, in the living man.
