Weihai City was upgraded from a county-level city to a prefecture-level city in 1987. Over the past five years, the city’s economy and various social undertakings have made great strides. In 1992, the city’s gross national product (GNP) increased by 1.6 times over 1987 to reach 13.1 billion yuan, an average annual increase of 21%. Its industrial output value increased by 3.7 times that of 1987, with an average annual increase of 36.3%. The total retail sales of social products increased over 1987 1.9 times, with an average annual increase of 23.7%; the export department of the foreign trade sector increased by 95.2% over 1987, with an average annual increase of 14.3%. Weihai City, made its achievements in economic development, with the City Planning Commission over the past few years in the reform process, with more attention to reality, exploration
