Pregnancy zone protein (PZP) is a pregnancy-associated alpha-2-glycoprotein whose plasma levels are low in normal men and nonpregnant women but treatment with estrogen causes a significant increase in plasma PZP concentrations. During pregnancy, maternal plasma PZP concentrations increase between 50 and 200 fold, reaching a peak in the third trimester of pregnancy. Liggins and colleagues point out that late third trimester glucocorticoid therapy reduces the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants. Therefore, this treatment has been increasingly used in cases of threatened preterm labor. Pregnancy women treated with glucocorticoids caused a temporary decrease in plasma estrogen concentrations and excretion of estriol, predominantly estriol, in the urine.
